Provide Challenge
One of the Care Leavers National Movement’s (CLNM) objectives is to provide challenge so that the system improves to better support young people.
CLNM does this in two ways. At a local level, it listens and shares views to improve services. At a national level, it raises issues and shares experiences with research organisations, charities, and politicians.
CLNM also provides challenge in the National House Project (NHP) and wider systems through their work. CLNM directly influences how NHP is run and delivered and can have a wider impact on children and young people in and leaving care through working with politicians and other organisations. Often, CLNM works in partnership with other charities or campaigns through participation and advocacy.
An example of CLNM providing challenge is when CLNM Reps met the Scottish Minister for Children, Young People and The Promise with other young people from Local House Projects (LHPs). They raised the issue of the discrepancy between leaving care payments received in Scotland compared to those in England and shared the impact this had. The Minister was grateful for the young people’s feedback and confirmed it was on her agenda for change.
Another example is the Trustee Advisory Group, which is made up of committed Reps who attend Board of Trustee meetings on behalf of CLNM. Two members of the group attend Board meetings as expert advisers to celebrate success, improve services, provide challenge and give feedback on Peer Evaluations and Recommendations.
CLNM shares its challenges at its annual conference.
